In a landmark move for Nepalese football, the Government of Nepal has announced the construction of a world-class football stadium in Jarshing Pauwa, Kathmandu set to serve as an alternative to the aging Dasharath Stadium.
According to the Ministry of Urban Development, the new stadium will be called the Ganeshman Singh International Stadium and will feature a 25,000-seat capacity. Located just 25 kilometers from Kathmandu’s core, the site promises easier access and modern infrastructure for players and fans alike.
“We have allocated NPR 20 crore for the stadium’s development,” the ministry confirmed.
This development comes as Dasharath Stadium continues to fall short of AFC standards, often criticized for poor maintenance, safety issues, and an unplayable pitch costing Nepal the opportunity to host home games on its own soil.
While this is certainly a positive leap forward for football, questions remain about project execution and delivery. Notably, another major sports project the Mulpani Cricket Stadium, also in Kathmandu has been under construction for years without completion. The comparison has raised concerns about whether Jarshing Pauwa's football project will face similar delays and political neglect.
Despite these concerns, the football community is hopeful that this new stadium will revive national football, provide a permanent international-standard venue, and boost Nepal’s chances of hosting major regional tournaments in the future.
