Nepal’s sports broadcasting industry is entering a new phase of competition with the upcoming launch of Himalaya Sports, set to go on air on May 8 under the Himalaya Television Network.

The new sports channel will be led by Suraj Giri, a well-known figure in Nepal’s sports and advertising media industry, who will serve as CEO and Director of Himalaya Sports.

With this launch, Nepal’s sports television landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, featuring multiple dedicated sports channels operating across different media networks.

Growing Competition in Nepali Sports Broadcasting

More than a decade after the launch of Action Sports HD by Dish Media Network, Nepal now has at least five active sports channels as of 2026, with more expected to launch in the near future.

While global sports broadcasting is rapidly shifting toward OTT and digital streaming platforms, Nepal continues to expand its traditional sports television sector.

Kantipur Media Group’s Strong Presence

The Kantipur Media Group currently operates two dedicated sports channels — Kantipur Max HD and Kantipur Max HD 2.

Originally launched as Kantipur Cineplex HD, the channel was later rebranded into a full-time sports broadcaster. It has covered major international and regional events, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), English Premier League (EPL), and the Nepal Premier League.

Action Sports HD – Nepal’s Pioneer Sports Channel

Action Sports HD, operated by Dish Media Network, remains Nepal’s first dedicated sports channel. Over the years, it has broadcast major global tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup 2018 and UEFA Euro 2020, along with various international and domestic sports events.

Himalaya Sports Enters the Market

The newly announced Himalaya Sports is now preparing to enter this competitive market. The channel has already secured broadcasting rights for the upcoming CAVA Women’s Volleyball Championship (May 22–30), marking a strong early step ahead of its official launch.

Industry observers will be closely watching how the channel positions itself against established players in the market.

New Entrants and Future Competition

Another upcoming player, Avenues Sports, has also entered the discussion after revealing its logo earlier. However, further updates regarding its official launch and programming schedule remain unclear.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Broadcasting Battle

One of the biggest upcoming competitions in Nepal’s sports media industry will be the broadcasting rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The rights in Nepal have already been secured by AcePro Media Pvt Ltd, but the key question remains: which television channel will ultimately broadcast the tournament? This decision could significantly reshape the competitive balance among Nepal’s sports broadcasters.

Nepal Among Growing Sports TV Markets in South Asia

Nepal is gradually emerging as one of the most active sports television markets in South Asia. While India leads with more than 20 sports channels, Nepal already has five dedicated sports channels.

In comparison, Bangladesh currently has T Sports, Pakistan has multiple channels including A Sports, PTV Sports, Ten Sports, and Geo Super, while Sri Lanka operates around three sports channels.

Conclusion

With new channels entering the market and major sporting rights becoming increasingly competitive, Nepal’s sports broadcasting industry is moving into what can be described as a “silent cold war.”

The coming years will determine not just the number of channels—but which networks will dominate Nepal’s rapidly evolving sports media landscape.
